New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) In yet another case of its kind, relatives of an injured patient Monday thrashed employees of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and scuffled with junior doctors after a slight delay in treatment. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when nearly 20 people came to the Jay Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, part of the hospital, with an injured man, Yaad Mohan, 26.

“There were a few serious cases and doctors were attending them first and thus Mohan’s treatment got delayed slightly. His relatives who were completely drunk started thrashing two staffers and attacked doctors as well,” said Kumar Harsh, president of the AIIMS resident doctors association.

He said the doctors protested for nearly four hours in the trauma centre but things were resolved after AIIMS director P. Venugopal intervened and assured adequate security to doctors.

Harsh said Assistant Commissioner of Police Kumar Gyanesh talked to the doctors and hospital staff.

“We hope things will improve soon and we are satisfied with the police assurance as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, AIIMS authorities admitted there was a staff crunch at the trauma centre. Of the sanctioned strength of 530, as many as 190 posts are lying vacant.
