New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) The repeated crippling of parliament has sparked a war involving the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left. The BJP is furious with the Congress; the Congress and others are blaming the BJP; and the Left feels the BJP and Congress are hand in glove.

Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told IANS that the BJP was deliberately disrupting the proceedings as it did not want to hear the truth, which “is difficult to digest”.

Congress MP Jesudasu Seelam said if the house discussed contentious issues, differences could be overcome, and the BJP does not want that to happen.

“The best place for debate is parliament and it should be allowed to function,” said Seelam, a Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh.

Lok Janshakti Party chief Ramvilas Paswan also hit out at the BJP.

Referring to the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday, Paswan said BJP leaders gave their speeches and then disrupted the house over police action against its activists in Delhi.

Allegations of financial wrongdoing over the Commonwealth Games of last year have led to repeated adjournments of both houses of parliament, after the government defended Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Marxist leader Brinda Karat said the disruption of the house was a “joint operation” of the BJP and Congress.

“If the house is disrupted, the Congress benefits due to the government’s deep involvement in corruption. The BJP benefits as it has struck a compromise with Congress on the issue of price rise,” she said, referring to rising prices which were slated to be discussed later in the day.

“People are concerned. Why are you not allowing the momentum in anti-corruption debate?” she asked.

BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu rejected accusations that his party was not allowing the treasury benches to have their say in the anti-corruption debates.

Naidu said the BJP wanted Home Minister P. Chidambaram to go over the police crackdown on BJP activists. “The government is showing its brutal mentality.”
