Chennai, May 2 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi Monday suggested that the parliament should discuss the role and powers of the Election Commission.
Writing for “Murasoli”, the party mouthpiece, Karunanidhi said the Election Commission following different sets of procedures for different states does not help in fostering democracy.
He also referred to union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s earlier remarks that the Election Commission adopting different set of procedures for various states should be discussed in parliament.
According to Karunanidhi, those who believe in democracy and have faith in our constitution expect regulation of powers and framing of guidelines.
Referring to the Election Commission’s stringent actions like vehicle checks and seizure of cash meant for bribing the voters, Karunanidhi said the election body should function in a neutral manner.
