Paraguay seeks Indian investment
December 1st, 2011 - 12:52 am ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 30 (IANS) Paraguay is open to Indian investors in the fields of agriculture, cement production, mining and hospitality, an envoy of the country said Wednesday.
“Paraguay is open to investments from India. We have a lot of land holdings which is cheaper than that of our neighbours (Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia). Thus, there are greater opportunities for Indian investors in the field of agriculture, mining and infrastructure sector including cement, real estate and hospitality,” Ambassador of the Republic of Paraguay to India Genaro Vincente Pappalardo said here.
Pappalardo said agriculture was the core area of the Paraguayan economy and Indian companies could cultivate jatropha in the country for production of bio-diesel.
Stating that the Paraguay river was one of the major channels through the Rio de la Plata port in Argentina, he said Indian companies could enter into a joint venture agreement for river transportation of iron ore from Chile to India.
Global tenders would be invited for exploration of natural gas, uranium and gold in the country and Indian companies could take part in it, he added.
Trade between India and Paraguay was $137 million in 2010 and $74 million in the first half of the current year.
