Panel set up to study draft law on sports reforms (Lead)
April 7th, 2011 - 7:14 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 7 (IANS) The government Thursday constituted a committee headed by retired Punjab and Haryana High Court chief justice Mukul Mudgal and with former badminton ace Prakash Padukone and former athlete Ashwini Nachiappa to examine a legislation that seeks to bring in transparency and good governance in sports bodies.
The committee will consider suggestions from the public on the National Sports Development Bill and make recommendations to sharpen the draft legislation.
“Sports ministry has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Justice Mukul Mudgal, retired Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, to examine, in details, the comments and suggestions received from various quarters and make appropriate recommendations to fine-tune the draft National Sports Development Bill,” the ministry’s release said here.
The other members of the committee are Railway Sports Promotion Board executive director and secretary Jhanja Tripathi, a representative from the Indian Olympic Association to be appointed by its president, and a joint secretary of the sports department from the ministry.
The committee has been given two weeks time to submit its recommendations to the government.
The ministry had Feb 22 published a preliminary exposure draft of the National Sports Development Bill on its website and invited all stakeholders, including sports bodies, sportspersons and general public to submit their comments and suggestions on it within a month.
“A large number of responses have been received on the preliminary exposure draft,” the release said.
The committee will examine all comments and suggestions received from both sports governance and legal angle and make specific recommendations for sports administration, sports development and welfare of sportspersons.
It will also comment on the role delineation between the government, the national olympic committee, national sports federations, Sports Authority of India and others, besides making recommendations on incentivising good governance in sports.
