Toronto, June 18 (IANS) A Pakistani Canadian has been formally charged with killing his teenage daughter for not wearing the hijab. Muhammad Parvez, 57, who appeared in court in Brampton on the outskirts of Toronto, was Tuesday charged with the first-degree murder of 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez.
He reportedly strangulated the girl in their home in Mississauga city in Greater Toronto Area Dec 10. Autopsy reports showed the girl died from neck ‘compression’.
After the murder, the father reportedly called the police.
The victim’s classmates at the Applewood Heights Secondary School had said that Aqsa had problems with her family because she didn’t want to wear the hijab.
On her father’s insistence, they said, she would wear the hijab while leaving for school, only to replace it with trendy clothes at school. They recalled how she would at times run to the washroom to change into modern dress.
The killing made headlines and shocked modern Muslims across Canada. Muhammad Parvez will stay in jail and appear in court again July 8.
