Pakistan won’t help US attack Iran: Zardari
February 17th, 2012 - 5:51 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Feb 17 (IANS) Pakistan would not assist the US if it attacks Iran, Islamabad Friday assured Tehran.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Afghan leader Hamid Karzai along with President Asif Ali Zardari participated in the third trilateral summit here.
During the summit, Zardari said that Pakistan would not provide the US with airbases to launch attack on Iran, reported Geo News.
Pakistan’s ties with the US came under a severe strain November last year after NATO airstrikes on two Pakistani Army checkposts in Mohmand Agency in the northwest region killed two dozen soldiers.
Islamabad promptly barred the passage of NATO supplies through the country and decided to boycott an international conference focussed on the future course of action in Afghanistan. It also told the US to vacate the key Shamsi airbase in Balochistan that was used to launch drone strikes.
Zardari said Pakistan and Iran need each other and no foreign pressure can hinder their ties.
Iran is under a new sets of UN Security Council sanctions. Western countries led by the US suspect that the Islamic republic is seeking to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists it needs nuclear power solely for civilian purposes.
