Pakistan re-elected to Unesco executive board
November 3rd, 2011 - 9:17 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Nov 3 (IANS) Pakistan has been re-elected to the executive board of the Paris-headquartered UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), a statement said Thursday.
Pakistan secured 156 votes out of a total of 186. Five countries abstained while 25 votes were declared invalid. No vote was cast against Pakistan, Online news agency reported citing a press release issued by the Pakistani embassy in Paris.
The other countries elected from the Asia-Pacific group were Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan.
The statement said Pakistan’s re-election was being seen as “historic” because the country got 50 more votes than the number it secured during its last election in 2007.
The increase in popularity of Pakistan in the Unesco is also being seen as an acknowledgement of Pakistan’s strong stand on various issues, the report said.
