Over 200 tourists rescued in Himachal
January 4th, 2012 - 10:09 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Jan 4 (IANS) More than 200 tourists who were stranded in hills overlooking the tourist resort Manali in Himachal Pradesh due to snow were rescued Wednesday evening.
Efforts are still on to rescue over 50 others, an official said.
Most tourists were rescued from Gulaba, 20 km from Manali, and were brought to Manali. They were struck due to snowfall that started at around 5 p.m., Additional District Magistrate R.K. Pruthi told IANS.
He said the operation was on to rescue over 50 other tourists stranded between Gulaba and Marhi.
“Snow scooters have been deployed to rescue them,” he said.
The hills overlooking Manali have been experiencing snowfall since Wednesday evening.
A government spokesperson here advised tourists not to venture into remote areas of the state during winter as chances of snow were high in the next three days.
“The weather in Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Chamba district is quite harsh. A sudden drop in the temperature, even in summer, can trigger winter-like conditions,” he said.
