Over 200 technology enthusiasts, both Thai and foreign, attended Thailand’s first Barcamp in Bangkok on January 26th.

Participants gave and attended talks on the hottest new technologies, blogged, made videos, and met other technology lovers. The conference featured talks in both English and Thai, on topics like Drupal, Ruby on Rails, agile programming, and the Thai software industry.

BarCamp is an international network of user-generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants — often focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats.

The first BarCamp was held in 2005 in Palo Alto, but BarCamp’s innovative format quickly spread all over the world. Singapore, Paris, Montreal, Boston, Tokyo, Shanghai and Mumbai have all hosted BarCamps.

Barcamp seemed to fill a niche Bangkok’s emerging technology scene. Many participants, which included local entrepreneurs, academics, expats and university students, expressed a long-held desire to connect with others in order to work on common projects, to find a job, to find employees or simply to share knowledge and learn from each other. Many expressed a strong interest in attending community-oriented technology events like Barcamp in the future.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Blognone, Codegent, Createch Software, Google, Kaoscapital, Microsoft, Proteus Technologies, Reuters, and Roofimon, the full-day event was entirely free for all participants.
