Over 1,800 women beggars held in Mumbai in three years
April 26th, 2010 - 6:24 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 26 (IANS) A total of 1,818 women beggars were rounded up in Mumbai and only 319 and 19 in Delhi and Kolkata respectively in the past three years, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Monday said.
“The number of women beggars hauled up in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata in the last three years is 319, 1,818 and 19 respectively,” the minister told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
“A study on girls and women in prostitution in India conducted between 2002-04 with the ministry’s support had estimated that there were about 150,000 to 200,000 prostitutes in six metro cities of Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai,” Krishna Tirath told the house.
