Orissa seeks help for workers stranded in Uganda
October 25th, 2011 - 5:45 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, Oct 25 (IANS) Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has asked the centre to ensure the safe return of 11 workers from the state who are stranded in Uganda since June, an official said here Tuesday.
Patnaik wrote a letter to the Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, he said.
Kalinga Moulders, a Bhubaneswar based organization, sent 15 workers from the state to work as contract labourers for the World Metals Limited, a Ugandan company.
The workers from the coastal district of Puri had gone to work in the company which manufactures iron products.
Four of the workers who have recently managed to return alleged that the rest are being ill treated. They are reportedly languishing, the chief minister said in the letter he sent Monday.
Patnaik requested the central minister to take up the issue with the Ugandan government through the Indian embassy.
Thousands of workers from the state travel outside for good remunerations every year.
