Orissa reinstates police officer who shielded rapist son
May 13th, 2009 - 1:39 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, May 13 (IANS) The Orissa government revoked the suspension of senior state police officer Bidya Bhusan Mohanty, who was accused of shielding his rapist son, an official said Wednesday.
“Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik revoked his (Mohanty’s) suspension Tuesday night,” a senior home department official told IANS.
In 2007, the state government suspended Mohanty - then director general of home guards - for allegedly shielding his 23-year-old son Bitti, who was convicted of raping a 26-year-old German woman in Rajasthan in March 2006.
Bitti, serving a seven-year jail sentence in Jaipur, was released on 15-day parole on Nov 20, 2006 but failed to return after the period expired.
The Orissa government had suspended after a court in Rajasthan issued a non-bailable warrant against him. He faced the charge of shielding his absconding son.
