Orissa Police get to question top Maoist leader
June 2nd, 2011 - 9:45 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, June 2 (IANS) A court in Orissa Thursday handed over the custody of a top state Maoist leader, an accused in the 2008 murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, to the state police for questioning, official said.
Duna Kesab Rao alias Azad, 41, who carried a reward of Rs.10 lakh on his head in Andhra Pradesh, had surrendered before the police chief of that state in Hyderabad last month.
A state committee member of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist and considered as number two in rank in the Orissa unit, Azad was found involved in more then ten cases including the sensational Laxmanananda murder case, Inspector General of Police (Crime Branch) S.K. Nath told IANS.
Azad is suspected to have a role in cases relating to attack on several police posts and looting of the district armoury in Nayagarh in the same year, he said.
The Andhra Pradesh Police had handed over Azad to their Orissa counterparts Wednesday night.
The Maoist leader was brought before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate at Nayagarh, who sent him to three days police custody.
