Orissa flood toll rises to fiveJune 24th, 2008 - 12:57 am ICT by IANS
Bhubaneswar, June 23 (IANS) The toll in Orissa floods went up to five Monday even as the water levels started receding in many areas, official sources said. “People have started returning home in some areas as the flood waters started receding,” an official of the state revenue control room said.
“According to the information we have received, at least five people have died due to the floods by Monday,” he said.
“However, thousands of people continued to stay in temporary sheds, school buildings, and on near national high way,” he added.
While two people died in the Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts, one person died in Bhadrak.
The flash flood, triggered by five days of heavy rains last week, has affected about 1.2 million people in nearly 900 villages in five districts of Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Kendrapara.
The worst hit is Balasore where about 800,000 people are homeless. Fearing an outbreak of an epidemic, the state government has sent over 50 medical teams to the affected areas, the official said.
