Orissa announces reward for capturing wanted tribal leader
December 5th, 2009 - 12:51 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, Dec 5 (IANS) Anyone giving information leading to the arrest of tribal leader Nachika Linga, allegedly involved in more than 50 crimes, including four murders, will be rewarded. That is the message police have sent to villagers in Koraput district of Orissa.
Linga is the leader of Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha, which the police describe as a Maoist-backed local outfit active in Narayan Patna block of Koraput.
“The activists of the organisation are involved in several crimes,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjeeb Panda told IANS.
He said hundreds of posters have been pasted in various places of the district and pamphlets have been distributed, asking people to help nab Linga.
“Those giving information about him will be suitably rewarded,” Panda said.
Though Panda refused to reveal the amount of the reward, another police officer said it would be in the range of Rs.10,000-50,000.
Police have launched a crackdown in several villages in the region since a mob of over 300 people attacked a police station Nov 20 and looted weapons at Narayan Patna town — the block headquarters some 500 km from here.
At least two tribals were killed on that day when police opened fire.
Panda said at least 72 people have been arrested in connection with the attack.
