Ahmedabad, Dec 18 (IANS) Only parliament can pass the Lokpal bill, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani said Sunday.
The BJP leader said the party was committed to a strong Lokpal but has also pointed out the shortcomings in the Jan Lokpal bill of Team Anna.
“We definitely need a strong and effective Lokpal, there are no two ways about it. But the fact remains that the Lokpal bill will be passed by the parliament only,” Advani told reporters here.
“When we had met Anna Hazare and his team, we had pointed out some shortcomings in their version of the Lokpal bill which they admitted. Now I have no idea whether they have rectified any of those flaws or not,” he added.
The BJP veteran said the party has expressed its views in the parliamentary committee by giving a dissent and it will take a stand when the bill comes in parliament.
“Our members in the parliamentary committee had given dissent on the report presented by the committee. Our point of view has been reflected there. The information we have got is that they have decided to include prime minister in it (Lokpal) with some riders,” he said.
Raising doubts about the government’s intention to pass the bill in the winter session of parliament, Hazare Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reiterating his threats of a renewed agitation from Dec 27.
Manmohan Singh later asserted that the government would try to pass the bill in the current session.
