One killed, many injured in Ghaziabad group clash

Ghaziabad, Dec 23 (IANS) A man was killed and a dozen injured in a group clash here, the police said Tuesday. The incident occurred Monday midnight in the UPSIDC Industrial area near Coca-Cola plant in the city when a group of 50 men from Dehra village attacked eight people from Bajehra, who were going to attend their duties at the Coca Cola factory, the police said.

Locals said the two communities were in conflict with each other for sometime.

The Bajehra residents were attacked with hockey sticks and iron rods by Dehra villagers, according to the police.

In the clash that the police said lasted for about 30 minutes Giriraj Sharma sustained severe wounds and about one dozen others also got injured.

Giriraj was rushed to a government hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said.

Tensions mounted in the region following the clash with Deputy Inspector of General Aditya Mishra camping at the spot. Security was deployed to thwart any possible violent outbreak.

District police chief L. Ravi Kumar said: “We have stepped up security in the area. A case has been registered against 12 persons on the complaint of Bajehra residents. They are being identified.”
