One killed, 6 injured in post-Mohali revelry clash
April 1st, 2011 - 12:25 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 31 (IANS) Revelry over India’s Mohali World Cup semifinal win against Pakistan turned ugly and led to a fight between two groups and the death of a young man in the capital, police said Thursday.
A 26-year-old-man died and six people were injured in Krishna Nagar area of east Delhi, police said.
“Gaurav, a driver with power company BSES, was killed while six — Abhisekh (17), Kuldeep Tomar (26), Akshay (29), Neeraj, (19), Shivam (16) and Sanjeev (45) - were injured,” said a senior police officer. Abhisekh is younger brother of Gaurav.
A fight broke between two groups celebrating India’s semifinal victory.
“They were attacked by another group after an argument. The injured were rushed to GTB Hospital and Hedgewar Hospital. Gaurav died at GTB Hospital later,” said the officer.
A case has been registered and police have arrested three people — Rajesh, Mahadev and Lalla — in this connection.
“The incident took place when people were out on the road following India’s victory and celebrating with dance and firecrackers. Gaurav along with his friends insisted that Rajesh and Mahadev, who were passing on a motor cycle at that time, join them in the celebrations,” said the officer.
However, when the duo refused someone in the group used foul language against them.
“Angry over it, the duo returned with several of their friends and attacked Gaurav and his friends. Gaurav was hit by a sharp edged weapon which led to his death,” said the officer.
