One dead, 8 hurt as anti-Jaitapur protest turns violent
April 18th, 2011 - 8:25 pm ICT by IANSJaitapur (Maharashtra), April 18 (IANS) One person was killed and at least eight people, including police officials, were injured when a protest here against the 9,900-MW Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project turned violent Monday afternoon.
While a Shiv Sena spokesperson said one of the protesters died in alleged police firing, Ratnagiri police declined comment on the issue.
Attempts to contact Ratnagiri Superintendent of Police Pradeep Raskar failed.
More than 50 protesters were reportedly detained by the police.
The Shiv Sena, with its local legislator Rajan Salvi, along with other local parties and non-government organisations Monday led hundreds of villagers from Jaitapur, Nate and Madhban and staged a protest against the proposed nuclear project, according to the spokesperson.
The protesters also attacked the Nate Police Station and reportedly manhandled the officials, prompting police to resort to mild caning.
Later, police fired in the air to control the crowd, reports said.
