Jammu, April 20 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah discussed measures to keep peace in the Valley during the summer months during his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P. Chidambaram, sources said Wednesday.
The meeting took place Tuesday, the sources said.
The state government is understood to have worked out a plan to act tough with trouble makers in the Kashmir Valley to ensure that the summer passes off peacefully.
Last year, more than 100 people, mostly youngsters, were killed in numerous street protests during the summer.
Abdullah is engaged in a “single-focused exercise to keep summer peaceful this year”, the source said.
The chief minister will be briefing the state cabinet later Wednesday about the measures to be taken.
The chief minister and the union home minister were of the view that the “ongoing panchayat elections, that attracted more than 80 percent of voters, would help in consolidating the forces of peace in the Valley”.
The multi-phase elections will continue till May-end.
“We might have to act tough toward the trouble makers because we have a responsibility toward the people, who want peace,” a police officer privy to the government’s strategy told IANS.
