Omar in Baramulla to assess fallout of CISF firing
January 3rd, 2012 - 12:37 pm ICT by IANSJammu, Jan 3 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flew to Boniyar village in Baramulla district Tuesday to assess the situation following a student protesting power shortage being killed in firing by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Class 12 student Altaf Ahmad Sood was killed and two other civilians were injured when CISF troopers allegedly opened fire on demonstrators protesting power shortage in their village in north Kashmir Monday afternoon. The valley is facing acute power shortage.
Abdullah, who had sent his two ministers and top police officers to Boniyar, 60 km from Srinagar, soon after the incident Monday, flew to the area from Jammu Tuesday morning.
Official sources said he disclosed to his aides that he wanted to be with the people at this hour, understand the sequence of events that led to the tragic incident and the action taken by the law and order authorities.
Five CISF troopers have been arrested on charges of murder, according to Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani.
The chief minister would hold a meeting in Srinagar to assess the possible fall out of the incident, the attempts by separatists and others to exploit the same for causing more trouble and the measures needed to maintain peace, the sources said.
“Law of the land will take its course,” Abdullah had told officers in a meeting late Monday night, according to the sources.
