Olympic flame lights passion in Hong Kong (Lead)

Hong Kong, May 2 (Xinhua) The Olympic torch relay slogan “Light the Passion, Share the Dream” was fully realised here Friday as the first run on homeland attracted a multitude of spectators. “It is a great and solemn honour for Hong Kong to be the first city in China to welcome back the Olympic flame on behalf of our proud nation,” said Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

As many as 120 torchbearers are set to cover a 26-km route before the flame is ferried across the Victoria Harbour onto the Hong Kong Island.

Horses, sightseeing ships and dragon boats are used to carry the flame.

Lee Lai-Shan, a former world champion and Olympic champion windsurfer, launched the relay from the Hong Kong Cultural Centre at 10:28 a.m.

Wong Kam Po, a world champion cyclist, is to wrap up the 27-km relay in the Golden Bauhinia Square. Wong won gold in the National Games of China (1997 and 2001) and the Asian Games.

Movie stars and singers, including Jacky Cheung Hok-Yau, Andy Lau Tak-Wah and Eason Chan Yik Shun, added charm to the spectators’ excitement.

The relay is set to end at 5 p.m. with Timothy Fok Tsun Ting, president of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, as the final runner.
