Olympic champions Germany finish last in Punjab Gold Cup hockey

Chandigarh, Feb 9 (IANS) The Punjab Gold Cup Hockey tournament turned out to be a disaster for Olympic champions Germany as they finished fourth and last, losing 2-3 to New Zealand in the play-off match for the third spot at the Sector 42 stadium here Monday.

The New Zealanders completely dominated the game to earn their first win in the four-nation tournament.

Andren Hayward (26th minute), Lloyd Stephenson (50th minute) and Joel Baker (70th minute) struck for New Zealand while Moritz Furste (17th) and Oscar Deecke (51st) were on target for Germany.

Germany got their first penalty corner in the 17th minute as Furste sounded the board to help the world champions take a 1-0 lead. Kiwi defender Hayward equalised in the 26th minute by converting a penalty corner.

New Zealand broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with Stephenson converting a penalty stroke. Germany again levelled scores through Oscar’s penalty corner strike in the 51st minute. In the dying moments of the game, New Zealand found the winner through Joel Baker.
