Nagpur, Aug 22 (IANS) An old couple were arrested, along with 11 accomplices, from a village in Maharashtra for attempting to ’sacrifice’ their grand-daughter in hope of getting a ‘hidden treasure’, police said Friday. Police in the Risod sub-district headquarters of Washim district, some 250 km from here, arrested Sikander Ali Hussain Ali, 65, his wife Bismillah Bi Sikander Ali, 62, and their eleven accomplices Wednesday, police inspector Parshuram Rathod told IANS.

Giving details of the case, Rathod said the police made the arrests late Wednesday night and saved the life of the five-year old girl just when they were about to kill and bury her. A three-feet-deep pit had been dug inside the Ali house.

The police action followed a tip-off from Ali’s neighbours who were shocked to see sacrificial rituals being performed on the girl.

While the police are interrogating the old couple and their accomplices, claiming all of them have confessed to the crime, they have so far refrained from arresting the girl’s parents as they are not sure whether the two were ignorant about the plan or party to it, Rathod said.
