Officials summoned over child workers in court complexes
January 4th, 2012 - 5:34 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the Delhi labour commissioner to appear before it Jan 11 in a case of alleged employment of children below 14 years of age by vendors in district court complexes.
The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Shah Endlaw also ordered the joint Commissioner of the Delhi government’s labour department to appear in the court along with the commissioner.
The court issued the directions after it suo moto took notice of a media report which alleged that children below 14 years were employed in various court complexes in Delhi.
The report pointed out that children below 14 years were found working as tea vendors, aides of notary public and food vendors in and around Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Rohini, Dwarka, Karkardooma and the Saket district court complexes.
The report alleged that young children were employed in violation of the high court’s previous order, imposing a complete ban on child labour in the capital.
