Official roughed up for non-payment of wages
October 15th, 2009 - 6:30 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 15 (IANS) Agitated over the delay in payment of work done under a rural job guarantee scheme, residents of an Uttar Pradesh village roughed up an official and paraded him after smearing cow dung over his body, police said Thursday.
Mohan Lal Patel, a block development officer (BDO) in Bahraich district, had to face the wrath of the residents of Mahsi village for not releasing their payment for the work done under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Bahraich is 270 km from state capital.
According to police, villagers Wednesday evening went to meet Patel while he was on a inspection of the village. However, when the officer declined to meet them, angry villagers held him captive in a school.
Later, the villagers tied the officer to a chair with ropes and assaulted him, police said.
Some people forcibly removed his trousers and shirt and paraded him in the village after applying cow dung over him, police said.
Villagers alleged that their 15-day payment for the work on construction of roads had not been released despite several reminders.
“A case has been registered against nearly 35 people. Of these, 10 people have been named in the case, while others are unidentified,” Inspector B.K. Yadav told reporters.
