Obama to focus on financial crisis, troop withdrawal: spokesman

Barack ObamaWashington, Jan 18 (Xinhua) US president-elect Barack Obama would deal with military withdrawal from Iraq and the domestic financial crisis after his swearing-in, incoming White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Sunday.”First he’s going to meet with his economic team to see where we are on an economic recovery and re-investment plan … so that the American people can feel confident that things are moving in the right direction,” Gibbs told the Fox News Sunday.

“And he’ll also meet military advisers to discuss conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan,” the spokesman said. “The goal of the meeting, regarding Iraq, is to keep our commitment to remove our combat brigades responsibly and safely over the course of the next 16 months.”

According to the Status of Forces Agreement between the US and Iraq, the US troops will withdraw from Iraqi cities, towns and villages by June 30 next year to their bases and would leave the country Dec 31, 2011.
