NRI murdered in Punjab, search on for killers
September 7th, 2010 - 9:49 pm ICT by IANSJalandhar, Sep 7 (IANS) The Punjab Police Tuesday launched a manhunt to nab the killers of a US-based NRI who was heading back to New York after spending over a month in Punjab.
The NRI, Mohinder Singh, was heading for the Rajasansi international airport at Amritsar, 140 km from here, late Monday night with his family when his vehicle was waylaid near Bhogpur village in Jalandhar district, 170 km from Chandigarh, by nearly 15 unidentified people.
The assailants fired indiscriminately at the vehicle carrying the NRI and his family, killing him. The victim had just started in a mini-bus from Manak Dheri village in the adjoining Hoshiarpur district for the airport when his vehicle was stopped.
The assailants, who came in two-three cars, later took away all cash and jewellery the NRI and his family were carrying. They then returned their passports.
The victim had come to India over a month ago for visiting his family in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts.
The police have registered a case at the Bhogpur police station.
“We are investigating various leads, including personal enmity of the victim with some people of the area over a land dispute. We are trying to nab the killers,” a police official in Bhogpur said.
