NRI killed while saving wife’s jewellery in Chandigarh
March 21st, 2011 - 11:18 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, March 21 (IANS) An NRI holidaying here was stabbed to death when he tried to save his wife’s jewellery from being robbed, police said Monday.
Hassan Mubarak, who was working in Saudi Arabia, had come to India two months back and was killed Sunday night in Mani Majra area by some youths.
Mubarak was scheduled to return next month. He was declared dead by doctors at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he was taken in a serious condition.
The victim’s wife told police that they were walking home after having dinner at a ‘dhaba’ (roadside eatery) when four-five youths waylaid them. She said Mubarak resisted attempts by the youth to snatch her jewellery following which they stabbed him with a knife.
The youths fled from the spot. The family rushed the victim to the government multi-specialty hospital where doctors referred him to the PGIMER as his condition was serious.
Residents of the locality in Mani Majra took to the streets after midnight protesting against the Chandigarh police. They alleged that police arrived at the spot only after two-three hours of the incident.
“We rushed to the spot immediately after we came to know of the incident. We got the information a little late,” Deputy Superintendent of Police J.S. Khaira said.
Protestors said police presence in the area was lacking, allowing criminals to have a free run.
Incidentally, the incident happened near the Tanishiq jewellery showroom where the Rs.10 crore heist took place in January this year.
