Now more courts to hear narcotics cases
December 18th, 2009 - 9:56 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) In an effort to clear the huge backlog of cases especially related to narcotics, the Delhi High Court Friday said that it will create more courts to deal with these.
A division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S.Muralidhar asked the government to create more courts in the five district courts in the capital.
The bench also said that they are in the process of creating two special courts in the high court to dispose of the appeals by the under-trials lodged in jails.
The court was also informed by the government that the process was on to appoint more public prosecutors to assist the courts.
On an average, a judge hears 189 cases daily, of which 113 are under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The court was hearing a plea by lawyer Manish Khanna, who has filed a Right to Information (RTI) application on the condition of under-trials in Tihar jail.
