Notice to Delhi bureaucrat for contempt of court
September 17th, 2008 - 10:55 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 17 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued contempt notice to the secretary of Social Welfare Department of the state government for not complying with the court’s direction to provide basic facilities in the foreign nationals’ deportation camp.A division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said: “Despite the specific directions from the court, most of them were not provided by the competent officer of the camp.”
It also issued notice to the chief engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) while dealing with a complaint letter from a foreign national pointing out poor facilities at the camp.
In the letter, addressed to the chief justice, Gabriel O. Ajisafe and 10 other foreign nationals from the deportation camp said the authorities had failed to provide basic facilities including drinking water and medicines to the foreigners housed in the Restricted Foreign National Camp in R.K. Puram run by the Social Welfare Department.
The court converted the letter into a public interest litigation (PIL).
