January 13th, 2011 - 2:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 13 (IANS) Heavy security was deployed in parts of south Delhi Thursday, a day after protests and stone pelting following the demolition of an illegal mosque by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).According to police, the situation in Jangpura area is normal and things are being monitored closely.
“Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Delhi Police personnel have been deployed at Jangpura and nearby areas. The situation is under control and traffic movement is normal in the area,” said a Delhi Police officer.
The DDA demolished an illegal mosque built on government land in Jangpura Wednesday, sparking violent protests by some, and prompting police to use force and tear gas. More than 1,000 protesters gathered outside the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station and in the Jangpura area and blocked roads, demanding reconstruction of the structure.
The protest continued in the evening with angry protesters offering prayers on roads outside the police station. All shops in the area were closed.
Traffic was hit in south Delhi Wednesday leading to diversions in other areas.
