No official Georgian word on snapping ties, says RussiaSeptember 2nd, 2008 - 9:17 pm ICT by IANS
Moscow, Sep 2 (RIA Novosti) Russia has not received any official notification from Georgia concerning the cutting of diplomatic ties, a spokesman of the Russian foreign ministry said Tuesday.Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Grigoi Vashadze said last Friday that Tbilisi would sever diplomatic ties with Moscow over its recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on Aug 26.
Russian ambassador in Tbilisi Andrei Nesterenko said: “We have not received any official documents or notification from Georgia on the cutting of diplomatic ties.”
“I can only repeat that the (Georgian) move (to cut diplomatic ties with Russia) would not contribute positively to bilateral issues,” the diplomat said.
Commenting on the recent conflict in South Ossetia and Russia’s adherence to the Medvedev-Sarkozy peace plan, Nesterenko said Russia had pulled out all its regular troops from Georgia and honoured all its commitments to peace in South Ossetia.
He accused Tbilisi of making attempts to restore its defences in the conflict zone and staging provocations against Russian military personnel there.
“Activity aimed at restoring Georgian defences in the South Ossetian conflict zone is being witnessed,” Nesterenko said.
