No need to panic, Delhi will host the best ever Games: Dikshit (Lead)

Bharatiya Janata Party New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) Sidestepping the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report on corruption and cost overruns in the Commonwealth Games projects and asking the opposition not to play politics over it, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Delhi will host the best-ever Games and there is no need to panic.
Emerging out of a meeting to review the progress of infrastructure preparation for the Oct 3-14 Games, Dikshit made it clear that an appropriate action will be taken on receipt of the report and accountability will be fixed, but underlined that successful conduct of the Games were more important.

“You are talking about something which has not yet come before me. Work is not yet complete. Accountability will be fixed,” Dikshit assured.

But, when pressed further on the issue, she angrily asked the reporter: “Do you want me to go to jail?”

“Whenever action needs to be taken it will be taken but only after the Games. I have not got any report from the CVC or any one else,” she added. Even the Sports Minister M.S. Gill denied any knowledge about the issue.

Dikshit also angrily rejected the suggestion that CWG Federation CEO Michael Hooper had suggested that the games could be shifted to London if Delhi is not prepared.

“Who is Michael Hooper?”, she said.

A government source said a letter of complaint has been sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a probe into alleged irregularities in the Games-related work.

Asked about the opposition’s hue and cry over the issue, Dikshit said the issue should not be politicised.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded a judicial inquiry in the matter after the sporting event gets over.

The chief minister has set a deadline of Aug 10 to clear debris and litter from the roads and Aug 31 to complete all the major works related to the Games.

“We have already cleared 16,000 tonnes of debris from the roads within a span of 14 days and all the agencies have been directed to complete the work by Aug 10,” she added.

About the meeting, she said it is required on a weekly basis for better co-ordination and to sort out problems if any.

“We have been weekly monitoring all the agencies involved in the construction and ensuring their co-ordination. We are keeping September for giving finishing touches of the major projects,” she said.

She even said that even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed confidence that Delhi will host the best games ever.

Dikshit added that after the completion of the projects, the government will be able to save some amount from what is allotted to it for the purpose.
