Bahujan Samaj Party Chandigarh, Dec 19 (IANS) A clear majority eluded both the ruling Congress and their rival BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) combine in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections as results were declared Monday afternoon.

In the final vote tally, out of 26 wards, the BJP-Akali Dal combine won in 12, while the Congress won in 11. Two wards went to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), while one ward was won by an independent candidate.

Initially leading in 16 wards, the BJP-Akali Dal combine later managed a final tally of only 12 seats despite some of the senior Congress leaders and councillors losing in the poll.

Prominent among the Congress losers were former mayor Anu Chatrath, Davinder Singh Babla, Chandermukhi Sharma and Harmohinder Singh Lucky.

The results are seen as a major setback for union minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal. Most of the losing Congress candidates are considered close to Bansal.

Polling for the wards took place Dec 17.

The municipal corporation house has 36 councillors, including 26 elected ones, nine nominated and the local MP (Pawan Kumar Bansal).
