No breakthrough yet in Pune gang rape caseAugust 12th, 2008 - 11:00 pm ICT by IANS
Pune, Aug 12 (IANS) The Pune police Tuesday continued investigations into the rape of an IBM customer care executive even as they were awaiting the statement from the victim. “It’s a very different case with the victim and the only ‘witness’ unable to talk; we are left with taking the investigations forward only on the basis of statements by the people surrounding her,” deputy superintendent of police Ravindra Pardeshi, who is monitoring the investigations, told IANS.
While the medical test report Monday confirmed rape on the 22-year-old girl, the police have not clarified whether it confirms a multiple assault, as alleged by the victim’s boyfriend Hemraj Brahmne.
“We cannot disclose anything from the medical report since the girl has not spoken as yet. She is still in the hospital undergoing psychiatric treatment, though she is stable,” Pardeshi said.
Accompanying the girl in the hospital are her mother and brother, with the police not allowing anyone apart from blood relatives to meet her.
The Nandurbar girl’s boyfriend Brahmne, who too hails from the same Maharashtra town, was the one who hospitalized her and filed the police complaint.
With respect to contradictions in the versions of the incident given by Brahmne and the girl’s hostel inmates, the police said that contradictions are bound to be there since the main party has not spoken, but all including Brahmne and IBM personnel are cooperating in the process of interrogation.
The investigating police officials have been camping at the IBM Daksh office near Pune, talking to every one right from the top management to all her colleagues and friends besides taxi drivers generally hired by the company.
According to the police complaint lodged by Brahme, the girl after receiving a call from her office on the intervening night of Aug 7-8 asking her to report back to duty had hired a taxi and while heading for the office, she was intercepted by some people including a few cabbies and IBM employees near Phursungi.
They took her to a hill and raped her before dropping her back at the hostel, Brahmne quoted the girlfriend as having told him the next day.
IBM has denied anyone from the call centre calling up the girl after she returned from the day shift.
