July 20th, 2010 - 8:52 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, July 20 (IANS) In a sensational jail-break, nine prisoners - of whom seven were serving life terms - escaped from the high-security Meerut jail in the wee hours of Tuesday after cutting through steel rods of the toilet window.
The state additional director general of police Brij Lal said: “The inmates somehow managed to cut the steel rods of the toilet window, from where they crawled out one by one. Then, they used the drainage pipe to slide down and slip away from the jail.”
“Seven out of the nine prisoners were undergoing life imprisonment after being convicted for murder and other heinous crimes. They were identified as Sanjay, Vijay, Sunil, Mobin, Ikram, Shakeel and Manoj,” he added.
The remaining two, Sabir and Faizan, were undertrials.
The Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday evening ordered suspension of the jail superintendent, chief warden and 10 other wardens.
