Nine killed as wall collapses on hutments
July 8th, 2011 - 5:37 pm ICT by IANSThane (Maharashtra), July 8 (IANS) At least nine people were crushed to death and several feared trapped in the debris after the boundary wall of a building crashed down on hutments at Kashimira town, on the outskirts of Mumbai, police said Friday.
Though police and the fire-brigade had rushed to the scene of the tragedy, rescue operations were hampered because of incessant rain since Thursday night, a police official said.
Mumbai, Thane and Raigad have been lashed by heavy rains since Thursday night.
The boundary wall was of an under-construction project just behind a local police station.
Details of the incident, including the identities of the victims and the number of people trapped were not immediately available.
