Ghaziabad, April 18 (IANS) Nine Ghaziabad policemen have been charged with allegedly abducting a youth and killing him in a staged shootout last year, the police said Friday. A case was formally registered against the nine policemen Thursday night after Special Additional Judicial Magistrate Sapna Mishra ordered an investigation into the incident.

According to defence lawyer Sanjay Tyagi, Meerut resident Bashiruddin filed a petition in court claiming that his son Saleem was a victim of a fake ‘encounter’ in September 2007.

Bashiruddin in his petition said that Sep 5, 2007, Saleem and his two friends - Ashu and Balloo - came to Ghaziabad to meet a relative.

While he was standing at the old bus stop, Sub-Inspector Mukesh Gautam, the then in-charge of the Sihani Gate police, his associate Sub-Inspector Nirmal Singh and seven constables abducted Saleem. They took him to an abandoned area near Hindon river and killed him in a fake encounter, Bashiruddin added.

After hearing about his son’s death, Bashiruddin contacted senior police officials, but his efforts to bring the guilty officials to book failed.

He then approached the court.

Though the case has been registered, the nine police personnel are yet to be arrested, said Superintendent of Police (city) Vijay Bhushan.
