Nine Assam university students suspended for ragging juniors (Lead)
August 7th, 2009 - 6:25 pm ICT by IANSGuwahati, Aug 7 (IANS) Nine post-graduate students of the Dibrugarh University in Assam, including two girls, have been suspended for ragging juniors, officials said Friday.
A university spokesperson said five students were suspended Friday, while four, including two girl students, faced similar action Thursday.
The action was initiated following written complaints to the vice chancellor against these nine students by junior students, who alleged that they had been “mentally tortured” by being asked obscene questions.
“The vice-chancellor has already ordered an enquiry into the alleged ragging incident and until such time the probe is completed, the nine students against whom there are ragging charges have been placed under suspension and asked not to attend classes,” Dibrugarh University registrar P.K. Bhuyan told IANS by telephone.
A four-member committee has been formed to investigate the incidents.
“If the students are found guilty by the probe committee, adequate action would be initiated against them. The university shall not tolerate any form of ragging on the campus,” Bhuyan said.
Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Friday urged authorities of all educational institutions to adopt a zero tolerance policy while dealing with students found involved in ragging.
“Let us make it very clear that there should be no compromise when it comes to taking action on students found involved in ragging. Authorities of educational institutions should deal with the menace of ragging with a firm hand,” AASU adviser Sammujjal Bhattacharya, said.
