Nikkei falls on financial worries
January 21st, 2009 - 12:02 pm ICT by IANSTokyo, Jan 21 (DPA) Japan’s key Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell below 8,000 to end Wednesday morning trading as the market sentiment was dampened by concerns over the US and European financial sectors.The Nikkei index lost 155.94 points, or 1.93 percent, to 7,909.85.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues was down 15.23 points, or 1.89 percent, to 789.8.
On currency markets at 9 a.m. (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 89.77-82 yen, down from Tuesday’s 5 p.m. quote of 90.41-43 yen.
The euro was quoted at 1.2880-85 dollars, down from late Tuesday’s quote of 1.2945-47 dollars, and at 115.70-75 yen, down from 117.04-08 yen.
