Nikah in the time of internet!October 16th, 2008 - 5:20 pm ICT by IANS
Patna, Oct 16 (IANS) Gazala Parwin, in her 20s, is grateful to the internet, which made her nikah possible when the groom working in Saudi Arabia was denied leave for the marriage at the last moment.”I am thankful to the internet for my nikah,” said newly wed Parwin.
Her family turned to the internet when they were told that the groom, Mohammed Fayaz Rizwi, would not be able to reach here in time for the marriage ceremony - on Tuesday - as his leave had been cancelled.
There was no way to postpone the ceremony: the date was fixed, all arrangements were made and invitation cards were distributed.
The family consulted clerics who gave permission to solemnise the marriage through internet, Mohammed Arshad, a relative of the bride, told IANS Thursday.
“Parwin accepted nikah with Rizwi in the presence of a cleric, family members and relatives from both sides. Rizwi offered the nikah over the itnernet using webcam in the chat mode and she accepted it,” said another relative.
Darul Uloom Deoband, a top Islamic seminary, approved nikah through the internet a few months ago. However, it made it clear that such a nikah should be performed in the presence of two witnesses and a wakil who would solemnise the wedding by announcing the acceptance of the bride and the groom.
