Chandigarh, March 8 (IANS) Three people, including a Nigerian woman, were arrested here late Sunday during a special operation to nab any foreigners illegally staying in the city, police said.
The Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) branch of the Chandigarh police conducted the surprise check and raided 15 hotels and six paying-guest (PG) accomodations.

Police said managers of the hotel Sagar in Sector-42 and hotel Park Grand in Sector-43 were arrested under the Foreigners Act for not maintaining the records of foreign nationals staying there and for not supplying information to police about their stay.

“One Nigerian woman, Zanifer, has also been arrested for impersonation as she did not provide her true details to the hotel where she was staying. She could not even produce her passport before the police,” Satbir Singh, deputy superintendent of police (crime investigation department), told IANS.

“From the preliminary investigations, it seems that Zanifer, who is about 30, has attained Indian nationality and is staying in some nearby suburb. Similar raids will continue on regular basis in the city in the coming days,” Singh said.
