Nigerian accused of duping doctors held in Bangalore
April 9th, 2010 - 1:54 pm ICT by IANSBhopal, April 9 (IANS) A Nigerian national accused of duping two doctors from Madhya Pradesh of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of getting them jobs in British hospitals has been arrested in Bangalore, police said Friday.
“A team was sent to Bangalore and the accused was traced on the basis of a mobile tower location. He was arrested Tuesday and brought to Bhopal Thursday,” a police officer said.
Five mobile phones, one passport and eight cards, including PAN cards, and cash were recovered from Ejro Orumah, associated with an international gang active in cyber crimes, said Inspector General Rajendra Mishra. Orumah has been in India since 2005.
“Orumah was part of a racket allegedly involved in online fraud. He had cheated Ratlam-based T.K. Tiwari of Rs.2.48 lakh by promising him a lucrative job in Westham Park hospital in London. The targets were selected through job placement sites like naukri.com and indiatimes.com,” he added.
Mishra said that Tiwari had uploaded his resume at a job site and the imposters, who posed as employers, had contacted him asking him to send passport details and 950 pounds apart from a fee for a residential permit.
Assuring Tiwari of a job, the accused later asked him to pay more money for other formalities. The complainant then got suspicious and, despite being assured that the entire amount would be returned if the job didn’t materialise, complained to the police.
R.S. Parihar, a doctor in Bhopal working with Hamidia hospital, became another victim of the gang. He was duped of Rs.68,000.
The police suspect that the accused could be involved in a number of similar frauds and the amount swindled could be as much as Rs.1 crore. Police said that it was an international gang and that the masterminds lived in London.
Efforts are on to find the other accomplices and recover the amount, police said.
