NHRC notice to Gujarat on child torture reports
December 22nd, 2011 - 9:04 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 22 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday issued notice to the Gujarat government after media reports alleged that children were branded with iron rods, heated nails and wires in Kutch and Rajkot districts.
“A notice has been issued to the chief secretary, calling for a report. He has been asked to inform where such inhuman custom is prevalent in the state and what remedial steps have been taken by the administration to stop it,” an NHRC release said.
According to media reports, children in Vagad region of Kutch and some remote parts of Rajkot are branded with iron rods, heated nails, wires and incense sticks in the belief that it will cure them of various diseases.
