NGO member held for rape

New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) A member of an NGO which offered help to girls suffering from trauma was arrested in west Delhi for raping a teenaged tribal girl three months ago, police said Wednesday.

Baba Wam Dev Ram, 26, hailing from Jharkhand was operating NGO BB Tribal Welfare Society from north Delhi’s Rani Bagh area since he came to Delhi around seven years ago, said a police official.

Despite being threatened, the victim contacted police June 4 and Baba was arrested Tuesday from Punjabi Bagh area, said police.

“He was also wanted in a gang rape case in Rani Bagh,” the official added.

According to police, the 18-year-old victim from Jharkhand came to Delhi in 2006 after being raped repeatedly by her employer in Amritsar, Punjab.

“She was engaged in menial jobs in the city until she recently came in contact with a woman, Shalami, who after listening to her ordeal asked the baba to counsel her,” an official said.

“The baba came to the victim’s house May 6 and raped her while Shalami was away,” the official added.
