sthisland_quake_150709_2 An earthquake had reportedly struck the south of New Zealand on Wednesday, thus triggering a possible Tsunami warning. The earth quake seems to have caused minor damage but no injuries were reported yet.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear sciences said that the minor shudder measuring 6.6 on the open ended Richter Scale, struck at about 9.22 p.m. According to sources, the government institute said that the tremor was centered in the remote and unpopulated region called Fiordland, which is about 150 km north west of the country’s most south ward oriented city, Invercargill. The earth quake was measured about 5 km below ground level.

The possible Tsunami warning triggered by the earth quake was later dismissed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The Civil Defence authorities said that only a small wave was generated as the earth quake struck the unpopulated region of Fiordland.

A tremor was felt at 9.22 p.m. at the center of Fiordland. The effect of the tremor was widely felt throughout the South Island and Taranaki, which is situated at far north. Reports suggest that an aftershock measuring 6.1 had hit 20 minutes later.

An emergency management spokesman in Wellington had reportedly said that initially reports indicated a wave, around the 17 cm height predicted by the Hawaii warning center. The reports were later dismissed by the officials although a small wave was detected after the tremor had struck.
Minor damages have been reported till now as there has been neither any reports depicting casualties nor any sort of injuries have been reported.
