New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) New Year celebrations turned sour for four friends when a speeding vehicle hit their car from behind while they were returning from a party early Thursday in south Delhi. One of them died in the accident.Nikhil Malhotra and his friends, Nidhi Rastogi, Geetika Sarin, Nikki and Nikhil Kumar - in their early and mid 20s - were returning in their Santro car from a farmhouse Sankariti Garden in Mehrauli after celebrating New Year bash.
They all have completed their schooling from St. Coulombs School and are in private jobs, the police said.
Rastogi in her statement to the police said Malhotra, 26, was seated on the left side of the rear seat when a speeding vehicle, which could be a truck, rammed into the car from behind near Shani Dham in Chattarpur area.
Kumar, who lives in Gautam Nagar, was behind the wheels at the time of the accident.
“Since there was lot of fog, they could not notice the proper make of the vehicle. The driver managed to flee from the spot in that vehicle,” Rastogi, who lives in Sarita Vihar, told police.
After the accident, the victims called for an ambulance. All were taken to the Trauma Centre in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where Malhotra, resident of Green Park, was declared brought dead. Nikki lives in Chittaranjan Park area.
Others, who suffered minor bruises and cuts, were discharged after the primary treatment.
“We only received information from the Trauma Centre. The victims did not call us. We have registered a case of hit and run on the statement of Rastogi and are investigating the matter,” said an investigating officer.
“We don’t know whether the occupants in the car were inebriated, as they were not cooperating with us. We will question them again once they come over from the trauma caused due to the death of their friend,” said the officer.
