Nearly five lakh classrooms needed: Minister
September 3rd, 2011 - 1:30 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 2 (IANS) Approximate 2.91 and 1.77 lakh classrooms are required at the elementary and secondary stage of education respectively in the country, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari informed the Rajya Sabha Friday.
In a written reply to a question, Purandeswari said that as per District Information System for Education (DISE) 2009-10, there are a total of 58 lakh classrooms at the elementary level (government - 38.18 lakh, aided - 5.23 lakh, unaided - 14.59 lakh).
According to Secondary Management Information System 2009-10, there are 5.78 lakh classrooms at the secondary level (government - 2.50 lakh, aided - 1.43 lakh, private - 1.84 lakh), added Purandeswari.
?Under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan 15.93 lakh classrooms have been sanctioned since inception, including 2.68 lakh in the year 2010-11 and 2.20 lakh in 2011-12. Under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan 48,884 classrooms have been sanctioned during 2009-10 to 2011-12 to fill the gap,? added Purandeswari.
